Regular Hero rescues man who drove car into reservoir
AUBURN TOWNSHIP, Ohio —
A 15-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after risking his life to save a man who drove a car into a reservoir.
Samuel Sell said he heard a massive splash and that’s when he saw a black Ford Fusion partially submerged in the reservoir near Auburn Township, Ohio.
“I didn’t want anyone to die. So I was trying to do what I would want other people to do if I were in that situation,” Sell told WEWS-TV. “I wanted to make sure the person was OK.”
Sell said he told his cousin to call 911 while he dove into the water and went after the man in the sinking car.
Sell said he took a knife along with the idea of breaking the car’s windows.
In the midst of his rescue attempt, firefighters arrived and used Sell’s knife to successfully break all of the windows and get the man out.
“It’s very commendable on his behalf,” Auburn Township Assistant Fire Chief Mike Cardaman told WEWS-TV.
Cardaman said the water was up to the man’s neck at the time of the rescue. A medical issue may have been behind the wreck, he said.
Police are still investigating the incident, but emergency responders said Sell and the man are going to be fine.
Firefighters say Sell’s bravery to keeping the situation from turning out a lot worse.
